Built in 1892circa, the weir consisted of 16 bays of tilt gates. The piers for each gate comprised a timber frame that was supported on four timber piles connected by a timber cross head.
For over a hundred years the structure had served the community. In April 2006 the structure almost collapsed. The Old Weir structure was decommissioned after a new weir was constructed in the winter of 2008. In January 2011 the Old Weir was opened again for a short time to alleviate the flood waters into Kow (Ghow ) Swamp.
